Gruesome torture sessions are being filmed for bloodthirsty gang bosses involved in Melbourne’s underworld conflict.
The Herald Sun has been told kidnap victims taken to secret locations have been left mutilated by sadistic thugs using weapons and tools on them.
A man’s ear was severed with an angle grinder in one particularly macabre Reservoir Dogs-style episode.
The attacks are believed to have involved some key players in Melbourne’s tobacco wars of the past two years.
While a wave of firebombings and extortions linked to that conflict have grabbed the headlines, there have been many cases of people subjected to brutal kidnappings and assaults.
In one case, a man unable to account for a large amount of cocaine was grabbed and tortured at length.
It is suspected some of the video content is distributed to others to reinforce what can happen to those who fall out of line.
But it is also suspected some of those ordering the attacks view the material and receive some gratification from seeing the pain being meted out.
There have been instances in recent years of victims being subjected to grotesque and humiliating sexual assaults.
A number of feared figures have employed the sexual degradation tactic on captives, one of them an overseas-based former bikie wanted for homicides and firearm crimes.
It is likely not all of kidnapping and torture cases are reported to police because of victims’ fear of retribution.
Victoria Police declined to comment.
There has been recent evidence of the phone footage being put to use in other gangland activity.
One crime boss reportedly demanded members of his team record their extortion work at tobacco stores.
This was so he they could send proof to him that his wishes were being carried out.
Another powerful crime figure has a history of using torture tactics which go back a couple of decades.
In one case, the man and family members were alleged to have held a victim and bashed him at length in an attempt to extract information.
Years before that, Carl Williams and a bunch of his flunkies lured drug dealer Mark Mallia to a tin shed at the back of a Lalor home where he was tied to a chair and subjected to sustained torture tactics.
Williams had viewed Mallia as a threat and it is believed the 2003 atrocity was also motivated by the desire to extract the location money from him.
He was murdered during the Lalor ordeal and his body later dumped in a wheelie bin at Sunshine.
