A Melbourne family was terrorised after thugs smashed into their home carrying machetes and a gun.

The elderly mother of Gurinder Singh had her head smashed against the floor during the terrifying raid of the family home in Kalkallo in the city’s northern suburbs.

Wielding two machetes and a gun, the home invaders had their faces covered as they smashed through a window using a pot plant from the garden.

Mr Singh, his wife, mother and two young children were at the mercy of the thugs.

Mr Singh’s elderly mother was aggressively thrown to the floor, causing her head to smash open during the ambush.

“Why did I have to experience this,” Mr Singh told 9News.

“They dragged my mum out of the stairway and threw her on the ground and broke her head so she had a lot of blood coming out of it.”

The elderly grandmother was treated in hospital.

Mr Singh was also slashed several times with a machete, suffering wounds including to the arm.

“I didn’t do anything, I just stayed calm.” he said.

Mr Singh said $20,000 worth of valuables and $10,000 cash was stolen.

The thugs fled the scene in a getaway car driven by a fourth unknown person.

All offenders remained at large on Sunday evening.

The family plans to sell the Kalkallo home to move to a safer area.

“We don’t want to be here. We are all working class families and we don’t feel safe,” Mr Singh said.
