Dashcam footage shows extent of Monash Freeway crash

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a B-double truck ploughed through four lanes of traffic during a 16-vehicle smash on the Monash Freeway on Monday night.

Dashcam video shows the truck, travelling in the right lane, smash into the back of several vehicles before veering across the three left lanes, destroying and damaging several others.

A trail of debris was left across all four lanes as a white vehicle was completely spun around to face more oncoming traffic.

Witness Rebecca Safi said it was “unbelievable” that no one was killed in the crash.

“I looked to my right and saw this truck, he was just going, he was not slowing down,” she told Seven.

“Cars were going everywhere.

“I think I watched that video about 100 times but it just shocks me every time I watch it.

“It’s unbelievable how people were walking away from that.”

‘Crushed like a can’

Two car enthusiasts have been left devastated after their modified Holdens were crushed in a horror 16-vehicle smash on the Monash Freeway.

It’s understood a B-double truck, which was towing two cars, merged right and collided with several vehicles near Blackburn Rd about 7.15pm on Monday.

After quickly pulling into the emergency lane, the truck then merged left, back into traffic, and struck more cars.

11 people were taken to hospital including the truck driver who suffered from serious injuries.

Shocking images showed the mangled vehicles surrounded by tyres and broken car parts.

Cooper Wilson and his mate Kel Roussety were on their way to Lorbek Luxury Cars for a meet when they were struck.

“Kel was the first car hit and mine second,” Mr Wilson said on social media.

“Our cars and hard work is all gone, the money and time we’ve spent wasted but we are here and alive.

“We got hit harder than you could ever imagine and we both walked away with only minor injuries.”

It’s understood Mr Roussety had just finished expensive modifications to his car on Saturday.

“Only two days ago, I just completed my car and now it’s been crushed like a can,” he said.

“Thank you to everyone’s support and love. I’m heading home now from the hospital, it’s a miracle I’ve come out of that with only a bump on the head and a few cuts.”

It’s believed the cabin of the truck was left “hanging by a hinge”.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, there were so many cars that were just totalled,” a witness said.

Senior Sergeant Paul Egan said even though the damage to the cars was extensive, it was a miracle nobody was killed or even more seriously injured.

“The driver of the truck said cars appeared down the side (of his vehicle) quite suddenly, and we’re still investigating that,” he said.

“There’s always a lot of activity on the Monash – I’ve been working in this area for 30 years and it’s always been the same issue.

“We have the same message for drivers every weekend, every day of the week: slow down and pay attention.”

Many cars were stationary when they were hit due to a separate collision ahead, with police describing the peak hour traffic at the time as “slowing or stopped”.

Anyone with dashcam footage or further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
