A missing hiker who vanished in the Victorian high country has been found alive after he set foot on a challenging 200-kilometre venture.

Rescue crews located the missing man on Tuesday after an extensive search through difficult terrain.

Hiker Colin, whose surname has not been released by police, was due to start a long trek on the McMillan Walking Track from Cobrunga on March 19, according to messages he exchanged with a friend.

Colin, 34, planned to hike all the way to Woods Point, a 210km journey which he anticipated he would complete by March 31.

He was then supposed to return to Omeo, near the Cobrunga starting point.

It comes nearly a year after grandfather Christos vanished in the nearby Dinner Plain area.

He went for a walk into the wilderness to find emus and never returned.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Bairnsdale Police Station on (03) 5150 2600.
