Two people have been killed after a stolen car smashed into a power pole in Melbourne’s north on Tuesday morning.

The vehicle lost control before the fatal crash at Camp Rd, Broadmeadows about 5.30am.

One male died at the scene.

Ambulance Victoria said the other male occupant had a “medical condition” and was transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

He later died at hospital.

The two men who died were a 37-year-old Coburg man and a 43-year-old Reservoir man.

CCTV footage shows the moment power was cut to nearby traffic and street lights as the car smashed into the electricity pole. Several shops closer to the crash site have been unable to open for business or even provide police with crucial CCTV as power remained cut on Tuesday afternoon.

Major Crash Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Daryll Out said the vehicle had earlier been spotted travelling at speeds above 180km/h on the Tullamarine Freeway.

Two firearms, including a sawn-off shotgun, were located inside the Hyundai.

“Early this morning there was a white Hyundai that was driving around and seen multiple times at high speed by a number of different people, including the police,” he said at the scene.

“Shortly before 5.30am this morning it crashed at high speed again into an electricity pole.

“The passenger died at the scene and the driver was taken hospital but died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

“The vehicle was seen traveling some time before the crash at speeds it’s estimated to be in excess of 180km/h.

“When this crash happened, the speed was estimated to be well in excess of 100km/h.”

Police say the Hyundai was stolen from Moama in December.

The pair is still yet to be formally identified.
