A Mount Waverley homeowner who had two groups of youths armed with machetes fight on his doorstep says his family have been left terrified after the ordeal.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said his young son and wife had not slept properly since the terrifying incident last Friday night.
It was just after 11pm when two teens were chased down by three older youths armed with machetes to his doorstep on Sadie St following an earlier altercation at a nearby illegal rave.
“It was very, very unexpected and very confronting,” the man told 3AW.
Horrifying footage from a home security camera showed one of the offenders in a black puffer jacket and orange cap hold a machete to a young girl’s throat and demand an apology.
“We could hear the screaming, shouting whilst that was occurring, we rang Triple-0 and just waited for the police to arrive. There was a fairly decent kerfuffle,” the man explained, adding that he and a neighbour had been kept up that night by noise from the booze-fuelled rave.
It was a split second decision to open the front door that led him to encounter the teens.
“I popped out (the front door) to see what was going on,” he said.
“ … I could see these kids running down and then this one kid coming, was making a beeline for the house and wanting to come in. So I had to confront this young kid. I said, ‘Go away.’
Recalling that frightening moment, the man said he quickly retreated inside to prevent the pair – also armed with a knife – entering the home as the violent trio followed close behind.
“What’s not on that video, is there’s a kid on the other side who’s carrying a different type of weapon, but basically the same length, and was clearly trying to jab the young fella,” he said.
“Once we heard things that calmed down, once the three larger kids had left, we popped out to see what’s happening, and we saw this young fellow with blood pissing out of his nose, out of his mouth, and extremely disoriented.”
“It’s terrifying. What could have potentially happened if they had made their way into the house?”
The ordeal comes as Victoria Police continue to battle an exploding youth crime crisis, amplified by the number of Children’s Courts operating across Melbourne being reduced.
Recent data from the Crime Statistics Agency, released last month, showed crimes committed by children aged 10 to 17 had risen to their highest level since 2010.
Victoria Police spokeswoman told the Herald Sun that officers attended the property following reports of an altercation outside a house just after 11pm.
“Police spoke to potential victims who did not wish to make a statement but were provided police details if they wish to make a report at a later date,” a spokeswoman said.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”
