Heroic witnesses have performed a dramatic citizen’s arrest of a man who allegedly stabbed two shoppers with a broken glass bottle on Wednesday.

Police were called to the Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre at Police Rd in Mulgrave following reports a man was armed with a knife about 2pm.

It is believed the man stabbed two innocent shoppers with a smashed glass bottle before two people pinned him to the floor inside the centre.

Footage of the horrifying incident shows a man appearing to lunge at security guards as many shoppers flee.

But it also shows some shoppers making a citizen’s arrest and detaining him until police arrive.

Bystander John bravely launched at the man after witnessing the alleged stabbings, telling the Herald Sun he feared the offender would attack someone else.

“He was obviously drug affected and he was hanging around the playground,” he said.

“He then was yelling inside at the two security guards who were standing and trying to get the man out of the centre and he smashed his juice bottle on some railing and started attacking them.

Two men, aged in their 60s and 30s, were stabbed at Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre.

“He sliced the first security guard on the face and the second across the neck.

The witness, who was filming the incident, quickly dropped his phone and raced to stop the man who was still holding the broken glass bottle.

“There were too many elderly people around,” he said.

“People on drugs are capable of terrible things.”

Police arrived a short time later and arrested the man, aged in his 30s, who remains in custody.

A 62-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A 35-year-old man also sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to Wednesday’s alleged stabbing.

It is the latest in a string of shopping centre attacks across Melbourne.

A number of teenagers were last week arrested after an alleged stabbing at Westfield Doncaster.

Police believe a box knife was used to inflict wounds on three teenage boys during a brawl involving seven youths about 5.30pm on Friday.

Shoppers have fled knife violence at Fountain Gate, Bayside, Highpoint, Woodgrove, Watergardens, CS Square and Epping Plaza in recent months.
