A gunman is on the run after a man was shot in Melbourne’s north after allegedly smashing his vehicle through a house fence and trying to run a group down.
It is believed the 20-year-old shooting victim got into a dispute with a group of young men on Cob Close in Broadmeadows on Monday evening.
Witnesses said he then smashed his vehicle through a fence at a property where the group was gathered.
The driver then reversed out and tried to run members of the group down before he was shot, witnesses said.
Neighbours described with wild scenes as frightening.
“I saw a car go through the fence,” a neighbour who asked not the be named said.
“As he reversed out, he did a 180 and then gone after the people on the outside of the car. Then one of the guys on the outside of the car lifted up his arm and I heard three or four gun shots.
“He (the driver) then sped off and the others all scattered — some got away on a small motorbike and the others ran off in different directions.”
The shot driver drove himself to a home in Meadow Heights where paramedics were called.
He was then taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
One neighbour, Asha, said she didn’t feel safe living in the area.
“This area is no good — it’s not safe any more,” she said.
She described hearing the gunshots.
“I heard pump, pump,” she said.
“I tried to look from the window but my kids were scared. I saw a group of around five or six.”
She described the group as aged between 18 and 23.
Police said they “are investigating after a man attended an address in Meadow Heights about 6.40pm on Monday with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
“The man has been taken to hospital for treatment.”
