Accused killer Greg Lynn joined a shooting club that re-enacted scenes from the American Wild West days before he allegedly murdered Russell Hill and Carol Clay, police claim.

In documents released on Tuesday, investigators say the former Jetstar pilot, 56, was accepted into the Little River Raiders Single Action Club on March 17, 2020 – three days before he allegedly murdered the missing campers in the Wonnangatta Valley.

According to its website, the club holds shooting competitions that reprise the “firearms, dress and demeanour” of the Old American West.

“Participants are required to not only use the firearms of the era, but to dress as such, and to observe qualities of conduct reminiscent of the 1800s,” the website states.

It comes as the statement of a forensic expert revealed he was tasked to investigate possible blood splatters after police told him an argument over a drone may have led to the accidental shooting of Ms Clay, 73, and fatal stabbing of Mr Hill, 75.

In the scenario put to forensic officer Mark Gellatly, Mr Hill grabbed a shotgun from Mr Lynn’s car during the confrontation and the men struggled over it before it was accidentally discharged and struck Ms Clay in the head.

Mr Lynn then fatally stabbed Mr Hill during a fight, the documents state.

Neither police nor prosecutors allege that scenario took place but Mr Gellatly was tasked to examine items, including the interiors of both mens’ cars, to assist the line of inquiry.

Mr Gellatly says he also examined a cache of more than 20 blades owned by Mr Lynn including knives, swords and a pick axe for blood – with seven returning a “possible” positive result.

But further testing could not confirm its presence, his statement said.

Other details about Mr Lynn’s life were revealed in police documents, including that he competed at the Little River Club on March 15 before he was accepted as a member.

Mr Lynn, who was an avid gun enthusiast licenced to hold nine firearms, was also involved with the Melbourne International Gun Club, police say.

The documents state Mr Lynn was a cadet in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1986 when he was aged 20.

After leaving the air force, Mr Lynn was employed as a pilot with a Tasmanian airline, Ansett and Qatar Airways before he joined Jetstar where he was senior check captain pilot.

The Herald Sun reached out to the shooting club for comment.
