An inner-city Greens councillor has been charged over a fight outside a Prahran club.
Yarra City councillor Anab Mohamud, 35, faces counts of assault, offensive behaviour and public drunkenness after a confrontation with another woman near Chasers nightclub in April.
Cr Muhamed is scheduled to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 5 after an investigation by detectives from Stonnington CIU.
Another woman, aged 29, has been charged over the altercation and bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 20.
The St Kilda woman will face court for allegedly recklessly causing injury and affray, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
“The charges follow an incident in Bray Street in the early hours of Sunday 11 April in which a verbal altercation between two women escalated to an alleged physical fight,” the police spokeswoman said.
The Victorian Greens Co-Convenors said Councillor Anab Mohamud was working to “clear her name”.
A spokesman said Cr Mohamud was “violently assaulted” while out in South Yarra on April 11.
She sustained serious facial injuries, including eye damage and significant blood loss, that left her hospitalised for some time.
“Her recovery from this assault is still ongoing,” the spokesman said.
“Cr Mohamud is glad that charges have been laid against the person who assaulted her, and is working to clear her name against allegations that she instigated her own assault.
“The Victorian Greens welcome that a court case will give Cr Mohamud an opportunity to make clear what occurred in the lead-up to her assault.
“As is appropriate, Councillor Mohamud is keeping Yarra Council updated as this process continues.
“As the matter is before the courts, the Victorian Greens will be making no further statement.”
A City of Yarra spokeswoman said: “This is part of an ongoing police investigation and therefore council is not in a position to comment at this stage.”
Cr Mohamud told the Herald Sun would make a public following court proceedings.
Cr Mohamud was granted personal leave from Yarra council duties in May. Councillors are permitted up to four months’ leave from attending meetings and conducting council business.
Cr Mohamud was elected as Greens councillor to the Yarra ward of Langridge last November.
She attended a Melbourne Victory FC Chairman’s dinner at AAMI Park in May.
