A man accused of killing Melbourne siblings Doris McCartney and Ronald Swann more than three decades ago has pleaded not guilty to the brutal cold case double murder.

Glen Nash, 58, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where he entered his plea after opting to have his case fast-tracked to the Supreme Court.

Mr Nash, from Rowville, was only arrested in April in a major breakthrough by homicide detectives who had been probing the deaths for almost 32 years.

His arrest came a month after Doris’ children Ian McCartney and Patricia Newman made a public appeal for information as police offered a $1 million reward.

Ms McCartney, 71, and Mr Swann, 69, were found strangled in the home they shared in Keith St, Moorabbin, on October 22, 1989.

Mr Nash is charged with two counts of murder.

“With regards to the two charges, are you guilty or not guilty?” magistrate Susan Wakeling asked him, as he appeared in the online hearing via video link from the Metropolitan Remand Centre.

“Not guilty, your honour,” Mr Nash replied.

He was directed to next appear in the Supreme Court on September 1.
