Fresh details emerge of alleged stabbing murder of Khalid Mahat in Heidelberg West

Eight months after Khalid Mahat was stabbed to death in Heidelberg West, it’s been revealed his mate was allegedly kidnapped and used as bait before the attack.

Eight charged after Heidelberg West death

Fresh details have been released about the alleged daylight murder of a young man stabbed to death in the front yard of a Heidelberg West home.

A bail hearing in the Supreme Court has revealed the chain of events that allegedly led up to the shock killing of much-loved brother Khalid Mahat, 25, after a group of teenagers were charged with murder.

Four minors – who cannot be named for legal reasons – were granted bail over the sickening attack prior to the group’s committal hearing earlier this month.

Three further co-accused have now also been bailed.

Documents detailing Justice John Champion’s reasons for granting bail to two of the underage co-accused in March, which were released this week, have revealed Mr Mahat had received a phone call from his mate, Abdulahi Abdi, just minutes before his death on the afternoon of October 16 last year.

Mr Abdi, who asked to meet up, said he was coming past to drop off a car to the North Crescent home in Heidelberg West.

What Mr Mahat didn’t know was that his friend was allegedly being held against his will.

Just two hours earlier, CCTV captured three men exiting a red Toyota approximately 60 metres from Mr Abdi’s home before placing hoods over their heads.

According to court documents, police allege the men and two others, who were all wearing face coverings, then entered Mr Abdi’s home and began to threaten him at knifepoint.

“Gimme the key card,” one of the men allegedly yelled, pressing a knife to his back.

“Gimme your phone or I’ll f – king kill you, I’ll stab you in the neck.”

He was then allegedly forced into the back seat of his white Toyota rental car before his kidnappers picked up more mates and drove to Bundoora Park.

There, the men allegedly passed around three kitchen knives as they assaulted Mr Abdi.

According to a police summary, he was then struck with a hammer before being forced into the boot of the white Toyota.

Here, they allegedly forced their victim to call Mr Mahat and arrange to meet up.

Thirty minutes later, an unsuspecting Mr Mahat heard the car horn and emerged from the home as the white Toyota pulled up.

“That’s him,” Mr Abdi allegedly heard one of his captors say as he lay trapped in the boot.

The driver then sped towards Mr Mahat who was standing in the front yard of the Heidelberg West home, narrowly missing him before crashing over a metal picket fence and into the house.

At that point, police allege a second car pulled up and eight males exited the vehicles allegedly carrying long knives.

Police say Mr Mahat was then stabbed more than 10 times in the neck and chest.

When they arrived at the scene, the accused had fled, leaving a bloodied Mr Mahat in cardiac arrest.

Paramedics tried to revive him but he died at the scene.

As police investigated, discovering two knives at the home, the group allegedly drove to Coburg North where they “exchanged clothing and threw items of clothing and a knife into the creek”, court documents reveal.

The clothing was later retrieved, along with the red Toyota and a hammer.

Crime scene analysis of the white Toyota revealed a large amount of blood on the rear left quarter panel as well as a series of fingerprints.

An autopsy the following day found Mr Mahat had died from a combination of blunt force trauma to the head and multiple stab wounds.

Mr Mahat’s brother, Xiis Abdi Mahat, later told the Herald Sun that he didn’t know why his brother died.

He said Khalid had aspirations to become an architectural engineer.

“Khalid was a kind-hearted person,” he said.

“He loved to take care of people, especially his family and friends.

“He always had a smile on his face.”

The alleged stabbing murder, which is one of seven in Victoria in the past 12 months, came just one day after police were called to the home of one of the teen co-accused after reports a group of men wearing balaclavas and carrying machetes were spotted outside.

Police later spoke to the teen after tracking him down in Heidelberg West.

He had fled his home after spotting the group of men carrying machetes, he told police, who overheard another of the males saying: “before these c--ts get too far away from us”.

The seven accused will face the Supreme Court again on July 13.
