Former St Kilda champion Jack Steven is being investigated over allegations he left the scene of a car accident and refused a drug test near his home town of Lorne.

Former St Kilda star Jack Steven is being investigated over allegations he left the scene of a car accident.

The 34-year-old was allegedly involved in a crash near his home town of Lorne, on the state’s west coast, on Tuesday.

His Ford ute veered into an embankment on the Deans Marsh-Lorne Rd at about 5pm.

A Victoria Police statement said: “The driver and sole occupant was not injured and fled the scene before running to a nearby house.

A 34-year-old Lorne man is expected to be charged with refuse preliminary oral fluid test and other traffic offences.”

It is understood the test is used to detect illicit substances such as methamphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis, and the home Steven ran to was the one he lived at with his parents.

Steven’s father Peter said he was unaware his son had allegedly fled the crash scene or refused to take a drug test. 

“He’s avoided a kangaroo,” Mr Steven told 7News.

“He’s just had an accident. We’re very lucky that he’s alive.

“It’s a very dangerous road. He was treated by the ambulance.”

Ambulance Victoria said in a statement it attended the scene but no emergency treatment was provided. 

Steven won four best and fairests for the Saints in more than a decade with the club.

He transferred to Geelong for the 2020 season after requesting a move to a club closer to family and friends.

Steven ended up playing nine games for the Cats before retiring at the end of 2020.

His stay was marred by an incident in which he wound up in hospital after suffering a stab wound to the chest.
