A well-known Keilor basketball coach has been stood down amid an ongoing investigation by Victoria Police following an alleged incident.

The Herald Sun can reveal Liam Glascott, 35, who has a decorated basketball career and was a former coach of Keilor Thunder Basketball Club, is expected to be charged on summons.

A Victoria Police spokesman said an investigation team had interviewed a man as part of an investigation into an incident in Keilor East in July.

“Detectives have been told the incident occurred at a home in Keilor East, sometime during the evening of Saturday 20 and Sunday July 21, while people known to one another were gathered at a home,” the spokesman said.

“The investigation remains ongoing.”

A Keilor Basketball Association (KBA) spokesman said the club had received a “formal grievance” on July 23 regarding conduct involving an employee.

“The employee was stood down the same day pending further investigation,” the spokesman said.

“Following initial review into the matter, KBA confirms that this person was dismissed from any active roles at the association on August 9.”

The KBA spokesman said the club was committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment where the community can enjoy participation in its competitions, activities or programs.

He added the association would continue to support its members and staff during this time.

“KBA encourages anyone that requires support to use the 1800 RESPECT and Lifeline (13 11 14) services,” he said.

“As these matters are currently being dealt with by Victoria Police, KBA has no further

comment at this time.”

In June, the club posted a photo of Mr Glascott, sharing it was “excited to have Liam coaching our NBL1 Camp and passing so much knowledge and skills onto another generation of ballers”.

Mr Glascott started playing basketball from six-years-old with his passion taking him to the rep level for both Melton and Keilor teams.

He started coaching domestic basketball in high school, before later coaching the rep youth league.

Keilor Thunder Basketball Club also crowned Mr Glascott as coach of the month in 2016 and 2017.

“In 2017, I stopped playing basketball due to numerous injuries and took over the Men’s program which saw us go from Big V Division 1 to NBL1 in six years – two of which were Covid years,” he said in a social media post.

“I love giving back to all levels of the sport, so I’m looking forward to helping at our NBL1 camp these coming school holidays.”

Two months later on August 9, Keilor Thunder Basketball posted a statement to its Instagram and Facebook pages, advertising vacancies for Mr Glascott’s positions.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to provide the best support for our players, the Keilor Basketball Association is seeking to appoint a new NBL1 head coach and high performance manager,” it said.

According to a job description posted to social media three days ago, a high performance manager at Keilor Basketball Association has a “pivotal role” in enhancing the overall performance and development of players and coaches.

“This position will oversee the development of coaching staff, oversee the player development pathway, and co-ordinate Keilor’s Jnr Representative Program,” the position description stated.

“Additionally, the role will support the NBL1 and Big V Youth League programs, manage the high performance team, and contribute to community and junior club development.”

Staff and volunteers working at the club must adhere to its child protection policy, which includes having a valid Working with Children Check.

Mr Glascott could not be reached for comment.
