A protester arrested over the chaotic freedom rally that gripped Melbourne’s CBD was a Hells Angels bikie.

Dennis Basic is accused of throwing a traffic bollard at a policewoman on horseback, causing her to suffer head and neck injuries that need ongoing treatment.

The 40-year-old was refused bail during a late-night court hearing on Friday where he faced nine charges over the CBD protest.

It’s alleged that Basic picked up a traffic bollard and threw it in the direction of a group of officers patrolling Swanston St on horseback, about 12.15pm on July 24.

A female senior constable was struck, while Basic allegedly fled.

The Narre Warren South man and former Hells Angel had previously been involved in a tit-for-tat feud with the Comancheros in 2013, with the then-prospect bashed by members of the rival club over stolen motorcycles.

He was later regarded as a “turncoat” by the Hells Angels after cutting contact with gang members.

Basic was allegedly among thousands of Victorians who flooded Melbourne’s CBD, where protesters clashed with police and stopped traffic last Saturday.

Police slammed the protesters as “selfish” and launched a statewide hunt for three people wanted for lighting flares.

Basic has been charged with assaulting an emergency services worker – an offence that carries a mandatory minimum six month prison term – intentionally causing injury, throwing a missile to injure and failing to comply with CHO directions, among other offences.

He appeared to share photos and a video from the protest on social media with the caption: “Thank you for showing up today, it was an amazing turnout … ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE”. The Facebook profile, believed to belong to Basic, lists him as a “dedicated social justice activist” and includes images from earlier Melbourne protests.

Basic has remanded in jail over the protest charges and will reappear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 22.

He was already facing court for separate matters brought by the North West Metro Crime Squad, with a contest mention set for early October.
