Former Geelong footballer Ray Card has been charged after a fatal smash that claimed the life of his partner at the weekend.
Card, of Grovedale, was severely injured in the crash on the Geelong Ring Rd at Lara on Saturday night.
It can be confirmed the 57-year-old woman travelling in a Ford Ranger involved in the crash was Card’s partner, Mandy, who died after the truck collided with a BMW in which a 23-year-old Lara man and a 19-year-old Lovely Banks woman were travelling.
Card was taken to hospital and on Tuesday was charged with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
He was bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 26.
Card is the president of the Geelong Past Players group.
Secretary of the Geelong Past Players and Officials Club, Nick Walsh, said they had been left “shattered” at the news.
“The past players and the club are deeply saddened at this news and the passing of Mandy,” he said.
“We are shattered and are sending our deepest condolences to the family.”
Card played 110 games for the Cats between 1977 and 1987 after making his debut against Essendon at Kardinia Park in the number 20.
He would go on to win the Carji Greeves Medal, handed to Geelong’s best and fairest, at the end of the 1983 season.
The midfielder infamously flattened Brownlow Medallist Keith Greig at Kardinia Park in just his second season in the blue and white hoops.
Card continued playing at a local level as captain-coach of the Wangaratta Magpies in 1988 before coaching Milawa to the 1991 Ovens and King Football League flag.
Card is the son of former Cat George Card and was recruited from Morwell in Gippsland.
On Tuesday, a Cats spokesman said: “Geelong Football Club mourns the passing of Mandy, partner of past player Ray Card.
“The Club extends its deepest sympathies to Mandy’s children, Ray, extended families and friends.”
