Four teenage girls and a 12-year-old boy have been arrested and a number of machetes seized after allegedly leading police on a chase across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in a stolen car.

Four teenage girls and a 12-year-old boy have been arrested and a number of machetes seized after allegedly leading police on an early morning car chase that ended in Harkaway.

Officers patrolling Waverley Rd in Glen Waverley spotted a stolen Hyundai i30 with five teens on board about 2am.

It began following the vehicle and called in the police helicopter.

The teens stopped on Finkal Rd in Harkaway where they were approached by police before fleeing on foot towards a nearby creek.

They were apprehended with the assistance of both the dog squad and the air wing.

Police believe the car was stolen on Tuesday August 6 from a gymnasium in Hallam.

Four teenage girls and a 12-year-old boy were taken into custody where they were assisting police and have since been released pending further inquiries.

Multiple machetes were allegedly found in the car after it was searched by officers.

The incident is the latest in a youth crime wave that appears to be gripping the state.
