A homeless man has been charged with murder following the stabbing death of a fisherman on Frankston pier.

The 36-year-old man will front court on Sunday over the death of the 45-year-old Cranbourne North man in an alleged “unprovoked attack” shortly before dawn on Saturday.

A traumatised witness told the Sunday Herald Sun the fisherman “didn’t even stand a chance”.

The witness, who did not want to be identified for his own safety, was emotional as he described the confronting incident he said unfolded in less than a minute just after 6am.

A witness said he checked on the Cranbourne North man, who was about 40m down the pier, before calling police and chasing down the alleged attacker.

“I checked the dude but there was no sign of life at all … no twitching, no noise, no nothing.

“I didn’t know whether to stay there with him or (not). I just saw the guy walking off and I just thought I couldn’t let him walk away,” the witness claimed.

“ … He stopped like he was thinking for a second … and then walked off.

“I ran on to the road hoping to wave down the police on their way to let them know which direction to look.”

Police were quick to arrest a 36-year-old man of no fixed address on the foreshore nearby.

Police confirmed the two men were not known to each other.

The deceased man’s body remained on the pier for much of the morning, next to his fishing gear, as homicide squad detectives probed his death amid challenging and blustery conditions.

The witness, clearly shaken from the ordeal, could only return to the pier late in the afternoon after he had assisted police and the crime scene was taken down.

He said there had been other instances of trouble on the pier but refrained from speculating who could have been involved.

He said the ordeal lasted “not even a minute” and was left shocked and appalled by the alleged attacker’s actions.

But the witness said he was extremely fortunate to be alive himself, as he had earlier been fishing closer to the foreshore from about 3.30am.

Only dog walkers and a handful of fishermen remained at the scene last night.
