An ATM in Southbank was set alight and completely burnt out on Wednesday morning in a seemingly failed attempt at a quick cash grab.
Gutted and cashless, the ATM X machine was found ablaze about 4.50am just after an automatic fire alarm sounded in the Southgate shopping and dining centre.
Four fire crews were required on the scene, swiftly extinguishing the blaze.
The fire has been deemed suspicious and is being investigated by Victoria Police.
The blaze burnt through and severely destroyed parts of plasterboard, with damage potentially spreading to an escalator above the machine.
Debris, including large pools of water were seen on the floor of two separate levels of the shopping complex.
The area was completely cordoned off on Wednesday morning as police continued their investigations.
