A man travelled on the wrong side of the road at high speed while sitting in the boot of his own car after trying to foil a robber making off with his Ford.
The victim, 29, left his sedan unattended in a carport on Fitzgerald St in Essendon before an opportunistic thief jumped behind the wheel about 11am on December 27.
As the thief began driving away, the victim jumped into the car’s open boot in a desperate attempt to stop him.
He could be heard screaming for help from the car’s boot as it sped away.
“He’s yelling out ‘help me, help me, this guy’s nicked my car’,” Victoria Police First Constable Paul Hogan said.
The thief was also yelling at the victim to get out of the boot.
The driver then steered the car on the wrong side of the road and travelling at speeds exceeding 100km/h over speed bumps with the victim still inside.
He dumped the car and escaped through a backyard on Guthrie St in Brunswick West.
