Elderly man assaulted by drunk tram passenger in St Kilda
An elderly man was left bleeding from the head after a drunk passenger struck him with a bottle in front of horrified onlookers on a tram in St Kilda.

An elderly man was left bleeding from a head wound and taken to hospital after being assaulted on a tram in St Kilda on Friday night.
Reports online say the 79-year-old man approached the offender, who appeared to be drunk, about his behaviour when he struck him across the head with a bottle.
The incident took place on the number 16 tram on St Kilda Road at around 9.30pm with one commenter posting that the attack left “blood everywhere”.
“One of my elderly family members was on the tram and said a guy (passenger on the tram who appeared to be drunk/ under the influence) smashed a bottle of whisky on an elderly gentleman’s head,” they wrote.
“He then threw the broken bottle towards the front of the tram narrowly missing other passengers. The elderly man was badly injured and there was blood everywhere.”
While another posted that she got a message from a friend who witnessed the whole ordeal.
“A bit of excitement on the tram tonight,” they wrote. “A man attacked another passenger with a bottle.
“People were screaming and trying to get away from him. He ran out the middle door and took off.”
There were varying reports on what the elderly man approached the offender about.
Some posted he told the man he wasn’t allowed open alcohol on the tram, while another said he had been making lewd comments to his daughter.
A police spokesperson said they had arrested the alleged offender at the scene.
“Emergency services were called to reports a man had been struck in the head with a bottle by another male passenger near the intersection of Fitzroy and St Kilda roads about 9.45pm,” they said.
“A 79-year-old St Kilda man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“A 45-year-old Mitcham man was arrested at the scene .He has been interviewed and released pending further enquiries.”
