The tragedy sparked fresh conversation about whether elderly drivers should be re-tested for their licence after a certain age.

Stricter rules for older drivers may still be considered by the state government

The Herald Sun on Friday revealed that nearly 70,000 Victorians over the age of 85 currently still hold a driver’s licence.

Nearly 40 of the 176 road deaths recorded so far this year were drivers aged older than their 70s.

Their age demographic represented the most lives lost of any age group this year.
