Forensic testing of human remains found in remote Victorian bushland and believed to belong to missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay has been completed.
The remains, which were found in Dargo in November 2021, on Monday afternoon were confirmed as belonging to the missing pair.
Jetstar pilot and experienced bushman Greg Lynn has been charged with two counts of murder in relation to the pair’s disappearance in March 2020.
“Victoria Police can confirm that forensic testing on human remains located near Dargo in November 2021 has now been completed,” police spokeswoman Nat Webster said.
“The coroner has advised Victoria Police that the remains are that of Russell Hill and Carol Clay.
“As the matter is before the court, we will not be providing any further comment.”
Missing Persons Squad detectives are continuing to work hard to shore up the Wonnangatta double murder case, as new details emerge about Mr Lynn’s life behind bars.
Online sales platform Gumtree has been enlisted by investigators to analyse nationwide advertisements of trailers in a bid to locate the missing trailer allegedly used by the Jetstar pilot the night of Russell Hill and Carol Clay’s alleged murder.
The trailer could potentially hold crucial forensic evidence that would be a significant asset once the case makes it to court.
While Gumtree wouldn’t reveal detail of its work to date, police confirmed they were still working on the theory the trailer may have been advertised on the platform soon after the pair were killed while camping on March 20, 2020.
“Despite a thorough and protracted investigation and a significant number of inquiries by the Missing Persons Squad, the trailer has not been recovered,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
“It is believed to have been advertised on Gumtree between March and July 2020 but may also have been advertised and sold elsewhere.
“Investigators have been working with Gumtree to examine sales of trailers matching the description in that time period but have not located it at this stage.
“Investigators are continuing to appeal for anyone who by any means may have purchased a rusty silver/blue 7x5 trailer with off road wheels between March and July 2020 to come forward and speak to police.”
Mr Lynn has spent ten long weeks in custody at Melbourne Assessment Prison.
He is subjected to strict conditions, including 23 hours a day locked alone in his cell, because of his quickly gained notoriety.
A prison source told the Sunday Herald Sun he would be a target if released in the general prison population.
The source added Mr Lynn has kept his head down and not caused any trouble since entering the system.
“He is quiet … there have been no incidents,” the source said.
Mr Lynn was arrested in late November while camping in Arbuckle Junction, about two hours south of Wonnangatta.
After days of intense questioning, police were led to a remote bushland site in Dargo where human remains were located.
Mr Lynn will return to court on May 31.
