An alleged Mongols bikie and his brother charged over an extortion plot told a Campbellfield business owner they would “shoot him in the legs” and he would “never see his kids again”, police claim.
Omur Karauzumcu, 40, who police allege is a patched member of the outlaw motorcycle gang, and his brother Onur Karauzumcu, 43, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court over the weekend.
Detectives from the bikie-busting Echo Taskforce charged the Roxburgh Park men on Friday after they allegedly demanded money from the business owner in November.
Charge sheets reveal the brothers allegedly stole the man’s Toyota HiLux – worth about $40,000 – on November 21, before returning two days later.
They are then accused of threatening to kill the man, telling him on November 23 they would “shoot him in the legs” and he would “never see his kids again”, if he did not transfer them $50,000 and the vehicle they had been accused of stealing two days prior.
Omur was arrested on Friday with the assistance of the special operations group on Mahoneys Rd in Thomastown.
He has been charged with two counts of extortion, two counts of making a threat to kill and theft of motor vehicle, among other offences.
He is also accused of handling more than $9000 in cash “suspected of being the proceeds of crime”, possessing testosterone and possessing a firearm.
Detectives swooped on the Mongols clubhouse in Port Melbourne on Friday, and executed warrants at addresses in Roxburgh Park and Mickleham.
Onur was arrested in Melbourne’s CBD and charged with two counts of extortion, making a threat to kill and theft of motor vehicle.
A 25-year-old Mickleham man was arrested and later released pending summons for handling stolen goods.
The brothers did not apply for bail and were remanded in custody.
They will return to the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on December 7.
The investigation remains ongoing.
