Police have condemned about 3000 pro-Palestinian protesters as piles of rubble were dumped in a bomb site replica on a major intersection in Melbourne’s CBD.
A 65-year-old Wedderburn man will be charged on summons after he was driving a truck that allegedly dumped a mix of concrete and gravel at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston streets.
After the debris was dumped, protesters swarmed and lay on the heap as they staged a fake war scene with a replica medic tent and fake bodies around tram tracks, about 3pm on Sunday.
Police said three flares were lit near Flinders St and another outside Parliament House, a police car was damaged and protesters climbed a tram stop.
The protesters blocked multiple intersections during the day and were told to move on.
“Police condemn the behaviour displayed and the misguided behaviour of some protesters that seemingly had no other motivation other than to cause disruption,” a police spokeswoman said.
“Police will review any vision or CCTV from the day. Our top priority was keeping the peace to ensure the event did not impact the safety of the broader community.”
