Harrowing CCTV footage salvaged from inside the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea captured the moment arsonists set the building alight.
The footage shows at least one offender, who appears to be masked and is holding a red jerry can, douse the synagogue in a liquid accelerant.
A panicked worshipper in an adjoining room spots the attacker, appears to yell at them through a door, before fleeing for his life.
The footage then captures the moment flames begin tearing through the synagogue, where merely moments before the worshipper stood.
The footage of last week’s firebombing of one of Melbourne’s busiest synagogues — an attack which is being investigated as an act of terror — was first revealed by Sky News on Thursday evening.
It is in the hands of the joint counter-terrorism task force which has been set up to investigate the attack, which includes Victoria Police.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton this week revealed three arsonists were believed to be involved in the attack.
“We have had a terrorist attack on that synagogue,” Mr Patton said.
“What concerns me is the callous nature of this attack, the involved nature of this attack, and the fact that the attack has taken place where it occurred.
“It’s quite clear it was targeted. It was callous and an horrific attack on the synagogue, but by default, it’s an attack on the Jewish people.
“When you have a crime like this that strikes at the fabric of the community, that is very, very concerning to us.
“Victoria Police and I personally condemn the callous and horrific attack, the targeted attack that occurred on that day.”
