Police have seized 2500 cannabis plants at Mordialloc in one of the state’s biggest indoor crop busts.

Investigators from Caulfield divisional response unit pounced this morning on a large factory in De Havilland Rd

The plants — valued at millions of dollars — covered a floor space of 678 square metres.

Inside the factory was a dodgy network of extension cords and power boards, some operating off other power boards.

The more mature plants had almost reached a height where they could almost no longer be grown in the cultivation area.

A wall of boxes and other goods were immediately behind the factory’s roller door so the premises looked like a functioning distribution centre.

Sgt Brooke Manley of Caulfield DRU said police expected to find the crop but did not know it would be so big.

She said those running it had powered lighting and other equipment by running an illegal electrical bypass from other nearby factories.

Sgt Manley said this placed neighbouring businesses in danger because of the risk of fire generated by amateur wiring of high voltages.

Local businesses reported the strong smell of cannabis in the area after air filtration equipment stopped running when police disconnected the power.

No arrests have been made yet.

Police are continuing to investigate the seizure and have appealed for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au
