The family of a builder who died in hospital after losing consciousness during an arrest has demanded answers about his death.
Police approached 35-year-old Luke Briggs in a convenience store carpark in Hoppers Crossing to question him over traffic offences about 2am on July 15.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman at the time said he became violent, wrestling with officers before they placed him under arrest, when he then became unresponsive.
It is understood Mr Briggs, from Hoppers Crossing, lost consciousness shortly after the arrest at the corner of Heath Rd and Tarneit Rd.
Police performed CPR on Mr Briggs before he was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition in intensive care until he died on Tuesday evening.
Two officers involved in Mr Briggs’ arrest have been stood down as the Homicide Squad investigates the incident with oversight from Victoria Police’s Professional Standards Command.
In a statement, Mr Briggs’ loved ones said they were “heartbroken” by his death.
“He passed away in the ICU ward at Royal Melbourne on Tuesday evening, wearing his favourite Bunnings jumper, beer by his side, surrounded by his whole family,” they said.
“In his final hours, we shared stories and reminded Luke how much we loved him while his favourite songs played in the background.
“We will miss you, Luke. We don’t know how we can go on without you.”
Mr Briggs’ family said they hoped the investigation would shed light on what exactly unfolded during his arrest.
“We couldn’t be more heartbroken with the tragic events that we’ve endured over the past nine days and we hope the ongoing investigation provides the answers we’re looking for,” they said.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said: “A male sergeant and a male constable, both from North West Metro Region, have been suspended while the investigation is carried out.”
