A 28-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged hit run in Melbourne’s outer east.

Police believe a 23-year-old Narre Warren man was critically injured in a crash that happened about 3.10am on Boronia Rd, Bayswater.

The victim remains in critical condition and is being treated at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Police allege the victim was sitting in the road when a motorist stopped to offer assistance.

The motorist called Triple-0 and was on the phone with emergency services when a Bayswater man allegedly struck the pedestrian at speed in a blue Ford XR6 sedan.

Police believe the driver may have been under the influence at the time of the crash.

It is alleged the driver did not stop and fled the scene, leaving the good Samaritan to care for the victim.

The man who allegedly fled was found asleep five hours later in his car in Ferntree Gully.

He is now in custody and helping police with their inquiries.

Major Collision Investigation unit detective Sergeant Darren Williams said it was a drivers’ responsibility to stop after a collision.

“You need to always stop and render assistance under the law,” Sergeant Williams said.

“These collisions can be avoided.”

“Police can go on and on about road safety but everyone needs to watch their driving and be aware when they are behind the wheel.”

Investigators want to speak to anyone who saw a blue XR6 sedan travelling in the area prior to the collision.

Investigators had taped off the road on Sunday morning, with all traffic being diverted.

A red Nike shoe and broken car parts were strewn across the road.

Steve, a local resident said he was shocked.

“New traffic lights and the pedestrian crossing have recently been put in 50m from the crash site,” he said.

The sedan was allegedly driving at speed during the time of the incident.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash has information about the driver to come forward.

Police have closed off Boronia road while the major collision investigation unit investigates the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam or CCTV footage, or any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
