Police investigating whether the death of a six-month-old boy was a murder-suicide attempt are yet to interview a woman who was flown to hospital.
The Mernda woman, 36, was still under police guard in hospital on Sunday.
The child was found critically injured in the Langdon Dve home about 9pm on Friday. The Herald Sun understands the boy’s father came home and made the grim discovery and called triple-0, alerting authorities.
Paramedics were unable to revive the child.
The woman, who is known to the child, was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries late on Friday night. She remains in a critical condition.
It’s understood she was looking after the baby at the time of the tragedy.
Police have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and were yet to lay charges late on Sunday, as tributes continued to flow for the infant.
One card left at the scene read: “taken too soon” while another said “RIP little angel”.
Bouquets of flowers were lined up outside the home as well as a blue teddy bear, a large stuffed dog and other smaller stuffed animals.
Shocked neighbour’s continued to mourn the tragic incident.
Shaun, a resident who has been living in the area for two years, said the shutters to the home were always down.
“They were tenants,” he said. “They have been there for less than a year.”
Another concerned resident, unknown to the family, laid flowers along the nature strip.
“I just live in the area, we heard what happened and we felt that we needed to lay flowers,” they said.
Detectives examined the house for clues on Saturday but police tape was removed from the scene on Sunday.
Police also searched a blue Lexus and a red Toyota Corolla hatchback parked outside the home’s garage on Saturday.
No charges have been laid and the investigation is ongoing.
