Police have charged a 64-year-old Kensington man after he allegedly smashed the windows of an Armaguard van with a hammer in a brutal road rage attack on Friday afternoon.
It is believed the white cash logistics van was driving along Racecourse Rd and was turning into the carpark of Newmarket Plaza in Flemington when it was nearly hit by a red hatchback about 1.05pm.
The hatchback driver then allegedly approached the van and used a hammer to smash the driver’s side window and front windscreen, cracking but not piercing the glass.
Footage taken from inside the van shows the offender swinging the hammer against the glass as he yells profanities.
Police arrested the 64-year-old man and on Friday night he was charged with criminal damage, unlawful assault and assault with a weapon.
He was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 3.
An Armaguard spokeswoman confirmed its two guards were uninjured during the confrontation.
“Our concern is with our employees and members of the community,” the spokeswoman said.
“We can confirm our guards were uninjured in the incident and we are providing them with support.”
