A man has overdosed on drugs in broad daylight close to the troubled North Richmond injecting room.

A man overdosed on drugs in broad daylight within 100m of the troubled North Richmond injecting room on Saturday.

Police, fire and ambulance crews responded to the critical patient on Smith St about 5pm on Saturday but failed to revive the man.

Police said they would prepare a report for the coroner following the man’s death.

“A passer-by located the man unresponsive on Smith Street about 5pm,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Emergency services performed CPR on the man but he was unable to be revived.

“Police are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage.”

Smith St runs adjacent to Lennox St, which is where the injecting room is located.

The fatal overdose shocked local residents after a string of newsworthy incidents in the suburb this week.

A makeshift squatters’ tent metres from the injecting room was dismantled after the Herald Sun brought it to the attention of authorities.

A machete-wielding man also made headlines when he allegedly swung the weapon at two others.

The 39 year-old St Kilda man faced court on Friday and was charged with affray, possessing a prohibited weapon and a bail offence.

Riverslea fatal crash

A man has died following a single vehicle crash in Riverslea, near Sale, on Sunday morning.

A passer-by spotted the vehicle, which had crashed into a tree, on Riversdale Road just after 4am.

The driver died at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

Women arrested over Footscray collision

Two women, aged 17 and 19, have been arrested after a stolen vehicle allegedly fled from a pedestrian collision in Footscray on Saturday afternoon.

Police were initially called to reports a Honda sedan crashed into a power pole on Trugo Lane about 4.20pm.

Officers located the sedan and approached on foot, in an effort to speak with the driver, but they failed to stop and allegedly collided with a pedestrian on Paisley Street.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers followed the vehicle towards Droop Street where they arrested two females.

The pair are currently assisting police with their inquires.

The pedestrian sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

The investigation remains ongoing, anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police officer caught drink driving

Meanwhile, an off-duty police officer has been nabbed for drink driving after blowing double the legal alcohol limit.

The 37 year-old constable was caught on Barwon Heads Road in Connewarre about 11.30pm on Friday night.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the officer, who works in the west, returned two tests before having his license suspended and copping a $772 fine.

He returned a reading of .11.

The spokeswoman said the Professional Standards Command had been made aware of the incident.

Woman charged over fatal crash

Detectives have charged a woman over a fatal collision that left an elderly woman dead in Geelong West last year.

Investigators from the Major Collision Investigation Unit charged the 67-year-old woman on Saturday with dangerous driving causing death, driving in a dangerous manner and careless driving after she hit a 79 year-old woman with her car.

The elderly Geelong West woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition before she died.

Police believe the Grovedale woman struck the elderly woman while she was crossing the road on Clarence Street about 1pm on March 16 last year.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the woman, from Grovedale, will front the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on July 16.

Cocaine cash seized in Cheltenham bust

Police have charged a 30-year-old man after tracking down thousands of dollars worth of drugs in the mail at the weekend.

Police were tipped off about a “suspicious package” due to arrive in Victoria via airmail on July 1 before intercepting the packages containing drugs such as cocaine and methylamphetamine at a Cheltenham property.

Investigators executed a warrant and seized $12,000 worth of cocaine, $30,000 worth of methylamphetamine and 25 litres of 1.4 butanediol.

MDMA, a taser and more than $40,000 in cash were also uncovered at the property.

He is set to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
