A man has been charged with performing the Nazi salute in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
The man is alleged to have made the gesture on Mason St, Newport, in the early hours of last Sunday.
The salute was given outside a home where police had been responding to a noise complaint at 3.50am.
“The 55-year-old Newport man has been charged with perform a Nazi gesture, stalking, and threats to kill,” a Victoria Police statement said.
The charged man has been bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 8.
He is the second person to be charged for performing the offensive act since the law came into effect less than one month ago, on October 21.
Well-known white supremacist Jacob Hersant, 24, from Point Cook was also charged with the public display or performance of Nazi symbols or gestures last month.
Six days after the salute was formally banned Hersant allegedly performed it on camera on the steps of the Melbourne County Court.
“Heil Hitler … nearly did it (referring to the salute) it’s illegal now isn’t it,” he said outside court.
Hersant will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 8.
