A young man has been rushed to hospital after allegedly being slashed with machetes and knives, and bashed with a baseball bat and hammer in a targeted attack in Melbourne’s west.
The 21-year-old was reportedly set upon near the McDonald’s in Weir Views, near the corner of Elpis and Exford Rd outside Opalia Plaza about 5pm on Saturday.
Police confirmed they were called to the vicinity of Exford Road about 5pm after reports of a stabbing.
“On arrival they located a man aged in his 20s with injuries,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.
“He has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.”
Jordan, 26, was the first responder on the scene and rushed to the victim’s aid.
She said she was just outside in the garage with family minding their own business when a black sedan pulled over at the intersection outside McDonald’s and four to five teens jumped out of the car with weapons.
“They had machetes, knives, hammers and a baseball bat.”
“They all got out of the car and he ran towards Exford Rd, and they got him near the bush near the red commodore and then he ran around and they got him at the bush near Maccas where they sliced him.
“They slashed him across the arm and then hit him across the head with a baseball bat.”
“We wrapped a T-shirt around his arm to stop the blood flow as the wound was very severe.”
“We applied pressure to his back wounds as well and waited a while until the Ambulance arrived which took quite a while.”
The good Samaritan said she felt shaky but just hopes the victim “pulls through”.
Her partner Matthew, 27, said the offenders and the victim appeared to be of “African-American or Sudanese background.”
“It took about 45 minutes for the paramedics to arrive,” he said.
Other witnesses who wished to remain private for fear of repercussions said the group of attackers, wearing balaclavas and caps, ran off towards the shopping centre car park.
They said it is quite common in the area.
At this stage no arrests have been made but police are searching the area and investigations are ongoing.
