15yo boy faces magistrate after alleged Bayswater burglaries, violent carjacking while on bail

A magistrate has refused to release a teen boy back out into the community after he allegedly committed a string of burglaries and a violent carjacking while previously out on bail.

Five teens arrested following alleged crime spree in Melbourne’s east

A magistrate has told a 15-year-old boy he must “wear the consequences” after he allegedly committed a string of burglaries and a violent carjacking while on bail.

The teen, who cannot be identified due to his age, and four co-accused, aged between 13 and 16, allegedly robbed or attempted to rob three service stations in Melbourne’s east before they threatened a driver with a knife and stole his car on February 10.

A children’s court magistrate on Monday refused the boy bail, noting he was already on bail with strict conditions including a curfew and non-association order at the time of the alleged offending.

“You’ve known full well your father ... would report you to police if you breached your bail,” the magistrate said as he directly addressed the boy.

“You knew that would happen and you did it anyway.

“You make decisions and you wear the consequences.”

The court heard the boy was on Youth Justice supervised bail and living under the watchful eye of his father who reported him to police when he discovered he was not home on the night of February 10.

Police allege the boy was behind the wheel of a stolen Land Rover while his co-accused attempted to rob a Bayswater Rd petrol station in Bayswater about 9.25pm.

The court heard the attendant activated a duress alarm and locked himself in a store room.

The offenders, who were wearing black clothing and masks, were allegedly spooked by smoke pouring out from behind the counter and left empty-handed.

Five minutes later, they allegedly stole cigarettes and attempted to steal a cash till from a service station on Dorset Rd in Croydon.

Smokes were allegedly stolen during a third aggravated burglary at a Mount Dandenong Rd petrol station in Croydon about 9.40pm.

The court heard the teens were tracked by police in the air and on the ground from Glen Waverley to Wantirna before the stolen car was dumped at the intersection of Stud and Boronia roads about 11.15pm.

Air wing footage played to court allegedly showed the boys using a knife to threaten the driver of a Ford Focus which was stopped at traffic lights.

The boys are then accused of fleeing that scene in the victim’s Ford before stop sticks were deployed by police in Mont Albert North, bringing the vehicle to a stop.

The teens allegedly fled on foot but were arrested nearby.

The court heard the stolen car reached speeds of up to 150km/h and ran several red lights, with police analysing air wing footage before deciding if they will lay more charges.

The boy, who is charged with aggravated carjacking and burglary, will return to court later this month.
