The feared bikie, the MAFS star and the $20m boiler room scam

One is a feared bikie who was once a member of the notorious Finks “terror team” and the other is a reality TV star. And they’re both embroiled in the same $20 million boiler room scam.

NOTORIOUS Gold Coast bikie enforcer Nick “The Knife” Forbes has vowed “I’ll die a Mongol” after been granted bail on charges relating to an alleged multimillion-dollar boiler room scam.

Forbes said he was going to party after securing bail in Brisbane Magistrates Court today on fraud-related charges.

He and his defence lawyer Michael Gatenby indicated Forbes would contest the charges.

The charges are linked to an alleged multimillion-dollar boiler room scam that has also embroiled a Married At First Sight star and a controversial former Glitter Strip cop

Forbes, a former member of the Finks bikie gang “terror team” who later joined the Mongols, was extradited from South Australia yesterday where he had been serving jail time over unrelated offences.

The heavily tattooed Forbes was yesterday brought off a Qantas flight from Adelaide to Brisbane in handcuffs, accompanied by detectives.

He has been charged with money laundering, fraud, disobedience of a lawful order and failing to appear in court.

The Brisbane Magistrates Court today heard Forbes was expected to have been released from custody in South Australia after serving a sentence for affray but was charged with the fresh offences dating back to 2012 earlier this week.

Police allege Forbes was part of a $20 million boiler room fraud scam also allegedly involving former Gold Coast detective turned private eye Mick Featherstone, former Married at First Sight love rat Daniel Webb and Broadbeach bikie brawl figure Jason Trouchet.

During a bail hearing on Wednesday defence lawyer Michael Gatenby told the court the allegation made against Forbes relates to him receiving more than $30,000 in his bank account form funds allegedly linked to the scam.

“There is alleged to be a substatial fraud... that over a period of nine months, $35,400 went into my client’s account, but that’s it. That’s as good as it gets,” he said.

“What did he do? There is no evidence of that.

“What was his level of knowledge? There is no evidence of that.

“This matter has been going on since 2013 and hasn’t yet reached the committal stage, for any of the defendants.”

Mr Gatenby told the court Featherstone, who is alleged to be the main offender in the syndicate, had been granted bail with no conditions that stopped him travelling overseas.

He said Forbes alleged offending was at the lower end of the scale and it would be “offensive” to keep him in custody.

“You have the material there and it’s just bewildering what Mr Forbes is alleged to have done,” Mr Gatenby later told the court.

The court heard Forbes had previously been charged with trafficking but the director of public prosecutions had indicated to Mr Gatenby the charges would be dropped.

The court also heard Forbes had been in 2008 convicted of assault and grievous bodily harm.

The incident was related to the 2006 ‘Ballroom Blitz’ on the Gold Coast where Finks and Hells Angels gang members traded bullets and blows at a kickboxing tournament in the ballroom of the five-star Royal Pines Resort.

Police today argued Forbes was a flight risk but he was granted bail on the condition he reside with his son at Coomera on the Gold Coast.

The matter will return to court on June 17.
