Exclusive: An Australian man has appeared in a Bali court charged with making his own cocaine using guidance from the internet.
Ryan Scott Williams, 45, appeared in Denpasar District Court on Monday where prosecutors asked that he be jailed for 15 months, under legislation aimed at drug users.
Williams, from Sydney, has two young children, who he said he was looking forward to being reunited with after his ordeal.
He was arrested in March this year after police say they received information from the community about drug use.
The court heard that when police raided Williams’ Kerobokan villa they allegedly uncovered 43.1 grams of cocaine.
According to the prosecution indictment, Williams allegedly told police, after his arrest, that he had first tried to make cocaine two years ago but had failed on that occasion. He kept trying without success until March 8 when he succeeded.
It is alleged that Williams bought raw materials, such as sodium bicarbonate, salt and vinegar in household shops in Kerobokan and purchased medicines from Bali drug stores. He allegedly received cocaine paste from an Australian friend.
It is alleged that each time he tried to make the cocaine, Williams wrote the formula on two pages of notes.
“The defendant tried to make cocaine for experiment and medical treatment. And the defendant had the principal that he would not stop trying until he succeeded. And once he had success he would use it for himself so he does not need to buy it,” the indictment said.
“The defendant tried to make cocaine only based on guidance he found on the internet. The defendant never studied formally to get knowledge about it. The defendant never made it with other people.”
The indictment says that no-one helped Williams. It is alleged that the first time he used some of the cocaine he had made was in a villa at Nusa Lembongan, an island off Bali, “but the result was not good, it caused injury to his nose”.
It is alleged that Williams used cocaine in Thailand and in Bali bought cocaine from unknown people around the Kuta area.
“The defendant used cocaine because when he lived in Australia he often had accidents and it caused pain in his body, he had a fracture in his hand and waist … Before using cocaine the defendant felt pain in parts of his body that had experienced fractures and he cannot do his activities. After using cocaine the defendant feels that his body is more comfortable, he doesn’t feel pain anymore and he could do his activities.”
The indictment outlined that Williams had acupuncture and massage and medicine but the medicine was not enough to reduce the pain.
He appeared in court yesterday with his right foot in a moon type boot and was walking with a limp.
The court heard that prior to his arrest Williams had undergone drug rehabilitation therapy and counselling in August last year and March this year.
Williams is currently held at the police hospital not Kerobokan prison and doctors have suggested he needs six months of rehabilitation.
Outside court Williams told News Corporation that he had hurt his leg.
He said he was hoping for rehabilitation as a sentence. Asked why, he replied: “Why do you think? It’s better than jail.”
“I just look forward to getting home to my kids,” he said.
Prosecutor Made Suara Teja Buana submitted his sentence demand to court on Monday, asking that Williams be found guilty of using drugs for himself and sentenced to 15 months in jail.
He said that in mitigation Williams had confessed his wrongdoing, had no criminal record and had to support his family.
The trial will resume on July 3 to hear the defence statement.
