Athens attacks: World Exclusive

World Exclusive: Graphic new video shows the moment underworld figure John Macris was gunned down while trying to run for his life.

The emergence of the 30 second footage (seen above) comes as his “totally stupid” killers appeal their convictions.

Macris was killed outside his hilltop home in Vuola on the outskirts of Athens, Greece in a cold-blooded hit in 2018.

The new video (shown above) shows the 46-year-old, who had two children with his wife Viktoria Karida – a former Playboy model – trying to flee a gunman.

But the video shows Macris had no chance, as the gunman shot him through his car window and then followed him to fire more shots while he was on the ground.

New details have also emerged about the botched car bombing of former Comanchero boss Jay Malkoun just four months after Macris’ murder.

Malkoun narrowly escaped death after being targeted at the same Athens gym where Macris worked out

Malkoun had a bomb placed under the driver’s side of his Mercedes Benz, which was parked in a gravel car park near the gym.

He managed to drag himself out of the exploded vehicle, and then a good Samaritan pulled him away from the car onto the side of the road.

Malkoun’s ankle and lower leg were injured in the blast, but sources say surgery has fixed those problems and he’s back at the gym.

Police in Athens have spoken about the cases for the first time in an interview with the Bikies Inc podcast.

“We’re always angry when a life is taken that way,” Lt Colonel Konstantinos Chasiotis said from Greece

“It’s not only because our children grow up in these same neighbourhoods, it’s because we strongly believe that no one should get away with murder.

“A murder case can remain open under investigation in our offices for many years, so we can assure all people that we don’t rest until those who did it,” he said.

Lt Colonel Konstantinos Chasiotis said “the bombing of Jay Malkoun is still under investigation”.

The aftermath of Athens car bomb (Today)

Macris was murdered on October 31, 2018, with police arresting two Bulgarian brothers Yuliyanov J Raychev Serafim and Milen Raychev months later when they had returned to Greece.

Greek authorities suspected they were planning another hit when they came back to Athens and stayed at the same hotel used at the time when Macris was killed.

Malkoun’s car was bombed in the carpark outside the Mega Gym in Glyfada, an up-market seaside suburb in Athens – five minutes drive from Macris’ home – on March 1, 2019.

Greek police said they have found no link between Macris’ murder and the bombing of Malkoun’s Mercedes.

“So far, we have no evidence that the bombing of Malkoun was linked in any way with the Macris murder,” Lt Col Chasiotis said.

A Greek court found Serafim guilty of Macris’ murder in September 2020, while Raychev was convicted for being an accessory to murder.

Serafim – who was convicted of being the shooter – was sentenced to 18 years’ jail, while Raychev, the getaway driver, was given 10 years but could be out in three.

Their lawyer Alexandros Androutsopoulos said he was fighting the convictions, claiming that the case did not stack up.

“Serafim only came back to Greece six months after the crime, he came back to Athens, he went to the same hotel in Glyfada, Athens,” Mr Androutsopoulos said.

“He went to the same rental car, he used the same ID, the same driver’s licence. If he was a hard international executioner, murderer or something would he do that?

“If they are murderers, they totally stupid. I don’t think that a professional killer would do something like that.”

Mr Androutsopoulos also claimed the CCTV footage given to the court did not positively identify Serafim, claiming that his body shape was different.

A court in Greece heard that clothes similar to those in the video were found in Serafim’s hotel room after the murder, along with a receipt.

He had also hired a rental car allegedly used in the getaway under his own name.

Macris, who had been a player in Sydney’s crime world, but moved to Greece in 2013.

He owned nightclubs on the party island of Mykonos but had set up a security business.

Tattoos on Serafim’s arm, seen in photographs taken at his arrest, show he had ink linked to the Outlaws Motorcycle club, which has a branch in Canada.

Macris’ widow welcomed the verdict at the time saying she was “satisfied” but did not respond to interview requests.

Panagiotis Papaioannou, a criminologist in Athens, said the brothers had a right to an appeal and it was expected to go through the courts.

But Mr Papaioannou said there was no evidence Macris was involved in crime in Greece.

“As far as the Greek justice system is concerned, Macris was having a proper life and he had an agency, a security agency, in Greece,” he said.

“He was a victim of, violent activity of, homicide and he is being treated as a victim, his family has been treated like a victim.”

Malkoun has kept a low profile since his return to Australia and is no longer in any bikie gang.

However, he was seen out for dinner with Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam at posh Asian restaurant The George on Collins last year (2021).

Malkoun, who owns land in Donnybrook, on the outskirts of Melbourne’s north worth up to $40 million, declined an interview request.
