Aiia’s killer Codey Herrmann makes shock blunder in court

Wannabe rapper Codey Herrmann, who killed Aiia Maasarwe when she was walking home from a Bundoora tram stop, silenced a Melbourne courtroom after making a shock blunder.

Man pleads guilty over murder of Aiia Maasarwe’s murder

A wannabe rapper who killed Aiia Maasarwe has stunned a courtroom by saying the wrong words when entering his plea in the Supreme Court.

Codey Herrmann, 20, last week pleaded guilty to the rape and murder of the Israeli student at Bundoora on January 16 this year.

But when being arraigned in the Supreme Court this morning, Herrmann, 20, stood slumped in the dock and said the words “not guilty” to the charge of rape.

Defence lawyer Tim Marsh immediately jumped to his feet and asked Judicial Registrar Mark Pedley if he could approach his client.

After a brief chat, Herrmann was asked again how he pleaded to the rape charge. This time saying “guilty”.

Asked how he pleaded to murder, he also said “guilty”.

Hermann also confirmed that he was unemployed and homeless at the time of the killing.

Ms Maasarwe, 21, who was in Melbourne on a study abroad program, was attacked as she walked home from a comedy show after getting off the Route 86 tram near La Trobe University.

She was talking with her sister on the phone at the time.

Her father Saeed Maasarwe told the Herald Sun on Friday after Herrmann admitted his horrendous crimes that he wanted his daughter’s killer to be locked away for life.

“The pain he made for us, I can’t explain,” he said, speaking from his home in Israel.

“Every day it hurts. I can’t hug Aiia anymore. I can’t see Aiia anymore. I can’t get Aiia back.”

Ms Maasarwe’s death from blunt force trauma sent shockwaves through the Melbourne community and across the globe.

Mr Marsh today told the court they would need time to prepare for a two-day plea hearing.

He said they would be requesting several reports, including ones that will assess Herrmann’s neuropsychiatry and his indigenous cultural background.

Herrmann was remanded in custody to face the plea hearing from October 1.
