Mobs trash tiny $2.3m Airbnb flat during wild party

NEIGHBOURS said they “couldn’t believe the damage” after 250 revellers swarmed a tiny flat on Airbnb and spilt onto the street outside.

Airbnb disasters and how to avoid them

A TINY Airbnb unit in a posh London suburb was trashed when hundreds of people crammed inside for a wild party.

Around 250 revellers packed the $2.3 million apartment, with dozens more spilling out into the street in Kensington in West London.

Some allegedly inhaled small canisters of nitrous oxide — known in Australia as “nangs” — and smoked weed, The Sun reported.

Thousands of dollars worth of damage was caused to the 74sq m, two-bed flat, rented on Airbnb for $535 a night.

A young woman and her mother collected the keys on Saturday, August 11, at 8pm. But within hours, dozens of people began arriving in taxis, with the party eventually spilling out onto the street into the early hours.

“I couldn’t believe the amount of people who turned up. They were everywhere — on the street, inside, in the garden, the music was pumping and the homes were vibrating,” one neighbour said.

“The party went on for hours and there were so many people. It’s a two-bedroom property and there was [sic] hundreds of people inside, I don’t even know how that many managed to get in.”

Images taken by shocked neighbours showed hundreds of partygoers, some sitting on cars holding balloons, dancing in the street as the property door is left open.

Others who arrived by car simply left their vehicles in the middle of the road, blocking traffic as the music blared from the property.

A close friend of the property owner, who only wanted to be identified as Raaj, said he attended the property as soon as a neighbour called him.

“I tried to approach the people who rented it and they said they would leave by 1am but I said it wasn’t right. When the police turned up they said they weren’t doing anything illegal,” Raaj said.

“So many cars and taxis arrived. I just sat there helpless, watching.

“I came back to the property a few hours after the party finished and couldn’t believe the inside — there was mess everywhere.

“The carpet was ruined, the walls, lamps were taken, there was lipstick on the walls, they caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

“They have now disappeared without trace and I have had to go through Airbnb who have said they are dealing with it, so I don’t know what to do now.”

London’s Metropolitan Police used an order to disperse groups to stop more people gathering. No one was arrested.

In a statement, Airbnb said: “We have zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour, have removed the guest from our platform and are providing our full support.”
