MELBOURNE Airport is urging passengers to check on the status of their flights this morning as heavy fog continues to engulf the city.

A spokeswoman for Tullamarine Airport said while the fog had not closed the airport as yet, it could continue to affect multiple flights throughout the day.

“We’d urge passengers to check in with airlines,” she said.

At least 20 domestic Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar flights have been cancelled from Tullamarine this morning.

The 6am Jetstar flight from Avalon Airport to Sydney had also been cancelled.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said thick fog had only just descended on the Melbourne Airport area and conditions would likely become worse quickly.

“It’s worse and more widespread this morning compared to yesterday, we’d expect it to disperse only very slowly clearing maybe by midday,” he said.

Last night, hundreds of passengers were stranded at Australian airports as heavy fog caused multiple flight cancellations.

“Due to low cloud or fog, Melbourne flights may be impacted this evening,” an Airservices spokeswoman said.

Tigerair Australia contacted affected customers via SMS and email.

“Safety is always our first priority and we are working to ensure our guests are safely on their way as soon as possible,” a Tigerair Australia spokeswoman said.

“Tigerair Australia is providing affected passengers with a range of alternative travel options, including, where applicable, a free of charge transfer onto other services today and tomorrow or a credit to fly at another time.”

No Qantas flights were affected last night.
