Dmitry Ukhin, 55, tragically died at his home, in the Leningrad region of Russia, from severe blood loss after suffering deep scratches from his pet cat.
Dmitry found cat Styopka and brought him home, back to the region’s Kirishsky District, on Friday 22 November, after the pet fled and ran away two days earlier, The Sun reports.
Disaster struck when the owner and his ginger cat went back inside.
That evening, the cat scratched Dmitry’s leg causing him to bleed.
Dmitry, who is a diabetic, could not stop the blood loss due to his body’s inability to form blood clots.
This disaster worsened because Dmitry was home alone. He managed to call his neighbour who then called paramedics but a local police officer confirmed that the extent of Dmitry’s injuries meant he died before paramedics arrived on the scene.
The officer said: “Around 11pm, a man called 112 to report that his friend was bleeding from his leg due to a torn vein.
“The doctors who arrived only confirmed the man’s death, which the police received a telephone message about.”
His neighbour said they provided Dmitry with first aid but claimed the medics took a long time to arrive.
Dmitry’s wife, Natalya, said Styopka liked to walk by himself, was kind, and was harmless.
The killer cat’s fate is not yet clear.
This is not the only recent incident of an animal unexpectedly killing a human in Russia, The Sun has previously reported.
A huge bear fatally mauled a father and son after the animal broke into their home.
The pair, aged 87 and 56, died in Luchegorsk, Primorsky region in eastern Russia.
This man-eating beast had also killed 35 dogs at a shelter near the family’s home.
The dogs were chained inside the shelter and could not escape as the wild bear mauled them within minutes.
Dog shelter director Olga Zamyshlyaeva said: “Our shelter is in a forest area, and the fence is wooden and flimsy.
“The bear came in at night, and 35 dogs died.”
She shared that the shelter did not have security but they discovered bear tracks at the scene.
