A TikTok video that’s both hilarious and slightly concerning has gone viral, capturing the moment an Aussie Gen Z kid struggles for over 90 seconds to lock an old-school car door, much to the amusement of his Gen X mum.

The video, posted by @nita_r88, shows the boy completely baffled by the car’s manual lock, which requires pressing the button and holding the handle up while closing the door.

“Lock the car. Figure it out,” his mum can be heard saying in the background, barely containing her laughter as her son fumbles with the lock.

He first tries to find the keys, prompting his mum to clarify, “No, you don’t lock it with keys. I want you to lock the car.”

The confused look on his face is priceless.

He then looks around the car, his brain ticking... before attempting to roll down the window to reach in and lock it manually, prompting his mum to exclaim, “No, you can’t roll the window down to lock it!”

He proceeds to walk away, defeated, but she calls him back with a firm “Lock the car!”

He tries repeatedly to press the button down and shut the door, but each time the lock pops back up.

“Lock the car,” his mum says again, her laughter growing louder.

Finally, after what feels like an eternity (and with a little more guidance from Mum), he cracks the code.

“So, what do you have to do to lock the car?” she asks, clearly enjoying her son’s hard-earned lesson in old-school technology.

The comments section erupted with amusement and relatable experiences.

“As a YOUNG gen z this makes me wanna cry.” one user commented. Another joked, “Screaming hold the handle up.”

Others reminisced about their own experiences with similar locks.

“Gen X here and laughing because I know how,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “This is why we can’t have nice things,” poking fun at the perceived helplessness of Gen Z.

The video is a hilarious example of the clear generational divide between those who grew up with manual car locks and those who are used to keyless entry and central locking systems.

Sometimes we forget just how much technology has evolved and how some things that were once commonplace can now seem completely foreign to younger generations.

“We have no hope with this gen,” one user jokingly lamented, while another simply stated, “I’m scared for the future.”

But amid the laughter, the video also sparked a conversation about how skills and knowledge are passed down through generations.

As one commenter wisely noted, “Anyone saying ‘kids these days’, you all had to be taught this too.”

Even some older viewers admitted to forgetting how those old locks worked!
