Private information belonging to up to 1.5m The Good Guys customers has been stolen in the latest Australian cyberattack.

The popular Australian electronics retailer confirmed on Thursday a large number of its customers had been exposed to the hacker for 18 months without anyone knowing.

The hack occurred on the IT system of Pegasus Group Australia Pty Ltd, now known as My Rewards Pty Ltd, which used to run The Good Guys reward service for Concierge members.

The data breach happened in August 2021, but the electronics retailer said it only just became aware if it.

Contact details of Concierge members, including names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, were compromised, along with some as some dates of birth and passwords.

No personal identity documents or financial information such as driver’s licence, passport or credit card data is involved.

The Good Guys has contacted 325,000 Concierge members who had set up a My Rewards

account, and a further 1.5 million Concierge members whose contact details may have been impacted.

The Good Guys Managing Director, Biag Capasso said privacy and data security is taken seriously.

“It is extremely disappointing that My Rewards, a former services provider, has experienced this breach. While we understand that no personal identity documents or financial information such as driver’s licence, passport or credit card data is involved, we have notified the OAIC of the incident and we are contacting all those affected,” he said.

A spokesman for My Rewards, said: “While we believe no serious harm has been caused by the breach, we are very concerned with the unauthorised access to the information and are working closing with the Federal Government authorities to minimise the impact of the data breach, as well as The Good Guys in informing those impacted and advising them of necessary precautionary action.”

The Good Guys own IT systems have not been breached and the retailer doesn’t use My Rewards anymore.

More information is available at The Good Guys Online Help Centre. If any Concierge member has concerns about their personal information, they should contact IDCare, a national identity and cyber support community service
