Scott Morrison makes light about secret job scandal on social media

Scott Morrison has taken to Facebook to crack jokes about a scandal that for others is no laughing matter.

Scott Morrison spent an hour defending himself on Wednesday over claims he engaged in a secret power grab by installing himself in five additional portfolios.

But just hours later, the former prime minister was cracking jokes about the saga on Facebook.

“Oh sh*t. Scott Morrison has secretly become our vocalist,” Australian metalcore band Eaten Alive posted with a poorly photoshopped picture of Mr Morrison’s head on a bandmate.

“That’s funny,” Mr Morrison responded, almost immediately.

By Thursday morning, Melbourne arborists Jefford Tree Services had joined in on the fun.

“What! Look who joined the team,” they wrote on Facebook.

“Scott Morrison just added Lead Climbing Arborist to his portfolio and started working for us without telling anyone! Great to have you on board Scomo!”

To which Mr Morrison replied: “I’ll let you know if I need any work done. What time do you need me for my first shift?”

It may be a bit of lighthearted fun for the former prime minister, but the news he was secretly handed power to the health, finance, resources, home affairs, and treasury between 2020 and 2021 has been no laughing matter for many within the parliament.

Greens leader Adam Bandt on Thursday moved to begin the first steps to refer Mr Morrison to the powerful privileges committee to investigate the matter further.

A referral to the privileges committee can be made by Speaker Milton Dick or by a resolution from the House of Representatives.

Mr Bandt revealed he had written to the Speaker to encourage him to consider the matter with urgency.

“Scott Morrison has potentially misled parliament and I want him held accountable,” the Greens leader said.

Meanwhile, there are concerns the decision to take co-control over the resources portfolio, then held by Nationals MP Keith Pitt, could have breached the standing agreement between the Liberals and the junior Coalition partner.

“Our Coalition arrangement is a negotiated outcome and they include a ratio of cabinet portfolios in a Coalition government,” senior National Bridget McKenzie told ABC’s RN.

“And by essentially removing the authority of one of those ministers and giving it to a Liberal minister without that minister‘s knowledge essentially breached the Coalition agreement.”

Nationals leader David Littleproud agreed.

“It should be transparent, not just with the Nationals, but it should have been transparent to the Australian people. That’s the most disappointing thing in this,” he told 2GB.

“No matter his reason, there is no reason for Scott Morrison not to have told his colleagues, both National and Liberal, but more importantly told the Australian people.”
