The original Super Mario Maker was excellent, but the sequel builds on that success, and takes in the feedback from the fans to come back better than ever.
For those who just want to play more Super Mario, there’s a story mode where you have to build a castle.
Over 100 levels, this conveniently also teaches you about all the different tricks and tools available to play with in the Maker, subtly preparing you to build your own, without feeling like a tutorial that’s holding your hand.
From there, you can let your imagination run wild and build the Super Mario game of your dreams, or see what other people in the community have made.
Because, after around thirty years of Mario games, they’re pretty formulaic.
Why make a new 2D platformer Mario when you can give a community of hundreds of thousands the tools to make their own games in ways the developers might never have thought of?
What’s impressive when building is the depth of options available, particularly when it comes to clear objects and switching things on and off. It’s possible to make truly diabolical levels to stump your friends.
Some of the community levels available are truly incredible, and other levels are what you would expect from random children trying to make a Mario game.
Not all the levels you make are shared far and wide, but if you’re feeling particularly proud of what you built, you can share your level code with your friends, and even have it pop up in a stranger’s Endless Challenge.

In Endless Challenge, you’re presented with a constant stream of levels of varying quality until you run out of lives.
Plus, there’s a dog. You can’t pat Undo Dog, but you can watch him destroy Peach’s castle, and really, isn’t that a fitting metaphor for pet ownership?
Bottom line: Do you own a Switch? You need to have Super Mario Maker 2. Do you not own a Switch, but enjoy Mario games? You need to buy a Switch with Super Mario Maker 2. This game is a must have.
