A LIVE stream of a professional video game match has broken a viewership record — attracting more than 1.6 million viewers.
The final match in the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive ELeague Major reached over one million concurrent viewers on video game streaming site Twitch, with an additional 651,000 people watching the event on YouTube on Monday.
While attracting global viewership, the numbers were unprecedented for a live stream of the first-person shooter video game — the previous record was 890,000.

To put this into perspective, the event attracted more spectators than Australia’s My Kitchen Rules and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, which had 1.3 million and 959,000 viewers respectively.
Interestingly, an earlier match in the tournament broke the 890,000 record during the second match of the best-of-three series.
The entire tournament ran from Saturday to Monday, with most matches attracting between 300,000 to 600,000 concurrent viewers.
A total of 16 teams competed in the $A1.6 million tournament, with Danish squad of Astralis taking out the victory in one of the most exciting finals in CS: GO history.
The members of Astralis collected $A659,00 for winning the first major of 2017.
