The eagerly awaited samurai action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima has been confirmed for a June 26 release on PlayStation 4, ending more than 18 months of speculation about the game’s release date.
The game, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, was first shown off during Sony’s E3 2018 showcase, wowing audiences with its visuals and style.
Set in Japan during the Mongol invasion of 1274, the game casts the player as Jin Sakai, one of the few remaining samurai on the island of Tsushima occupying a strategically important place between the Mongol invasion fleet and mainland Japan.
Vowing revenge on the Mongols for devastating the island, Jin goes on the warpath, finding himself torn between honouring his samurai traditions and adopting new ways of warfare to defeat his foes – and learning The Way Of The Ghost in the process.
The developers have promised the game will give players the chance to “venture beyond the battlefield to experience feudal Japan like never before”, with an open-world setting featuring vast countryside, expansive terrain and ancient landmarks.
The promotional materials for the game say players will be able to “explore meticulously-crafted regions showcasing diversity of life on the sprawling island — from billowing fields and tranquil shrines to ancient forests, villages and stark mountainscapes” and “find peace in quiet moments of natural harmony, and solace in the moments you’ll share with the people you help along the way”.
Jin will not be alone in his quest either, with several friends and foes alike accompanying him along his path.
As someone who loves a good samurai epic and open world games, I am very excited for Ghost of Tsushima – I’ve been waiting for a release date ever since I saw the first demo at E3 2018, and the new trailer has shown off more of a world I’m now looking forward to exploring in a few months.
