Wet stormy start to long weekend in every capital city

Some cities are set for a long weekend of rain and storms while others will clear the way for blue skies in the next 24 hours.

The long weekend could be a washout for many Aussies as heavy rain and strong winds hit multiple states.

Millions of families are looking to hit the road this morning to kick off a four-day break with overnight showers bringing grey skies for many.

It’s a bumper long weekend with Easter, Ramadan and Passover celebrations all coinciding over the public holiday period.

Here’s what the weather is looking like in your state.

NSW

Sydney residents have woken to a wet start to the Easter long weekend as cloudy skies and a high chance of showers forecast for the rest of the day.

A severe thunderstorm is possible with a potential for 10mm of rain to fall in the next 24 hours.

The weather is expected to clear by Saturday with a top of 25C though winds of up to 40km/h are possible in the morning.

Victoria

The wet weather system lingering over the east coast will bring a drenching to Melbourne.

Up to 25mm of rain is expected to fall over the city on Friday as showers and a possible thunderstorm arrive.

It’s looking to be a wet long weekend for Victorians with blue skies not due to return until next Wednesday.

Queensland

A warm stormy day is ahead for Brisbane with a maximum temperature of 27C.

Up to 25mm is due to fall over the capital on Friday before a storm brews into the late afternoon and evening.

The rain is likely to clear by Saturday though with a sunny long weekend ahead.

WA

A shower or two is forecast for Perth with a high of 25C.

Sowers are due to linger through the day with a thunderstorm possible in the afternoon and evening.

Winds are forecast to pick up later in the day with an easterly of up to 40km/h earlier in the day.

The sun is expected to pop out through grey skies on Saturday and Sunday however, lifting the temperature to at top of 26C.

SA

A wet weekend is ahead for Adelaide residents as showers likely to hit the southern capital every day until Tuesday.

A top of 22C on Friday will the highest the mercury gets all weekend with temperatures due to stick around the 19C mark.

Tasmania

Wild weather is on the cards for Hobart this weekend with thunderstorms, hail and strong winds all making a feature.

The city will see about 8mm on Friday with a chance of a thunderstorm later in the morning and afternoon.

Saturday will bring a high chance of showers with the possibility of small hail in the evening.

While Sunday and Monday are expected to bring 10mm of rain each day with winds getting up to 45km/h from the south west.

ACT

Up to 20mm of rain could fall over the nation’s capital on Friday with a chance thunderstorm brewing in the afternoon.

A top of 19C is forecast.

The weather will ease by Saturday as the skies clear and the sun pokes out from behind the clouds.

Northern Territory

A high chance of showers in Darwin this Friday with a chance of a severe thunderstorm later in the day.

The wet weather is likely to stick around for the duration of the long weekend.

There is a chance a tropical cyclone may form over the Top End on Sunday.
