Parts of Queensland’s Scenic Rim dusted with snow for the first time in nearly a decade

Footage of snow falling in a surprising part of Australia has emerged as chilly temperatures and gusty winds hit large parts of the country’s southeast.

More snow has fallen in parts of Queensland’s Scenic Rim after the region welcomed the frosty sights for the first time in almost a decade.

It comes as strong winds and chilly temperatures continue for much of southeastern Australia.

Light snow flurries were forecast for the Granite Belt region of southern Queensland from Tuesday and are expected to continue into Thursday as temperatures fall below zero.

Stanthorpe Holiday Park shared footage of “light flurries” falling about 7pm on Wednesday.

The snow was reportedly just “floating around” and was like “little ice blocks” when they fell into the hand of the person filming.

The video, which has been shared more than 350 times in two hours, received a great reaction from many people hoping to catch a glimpse of snow.

One person said they can’t wait to get to Stanthorpe on Friday.

“Keep the snow coming for us,” they wrote.

Another said: “no wonder it’s so cold”.

Meanwhile, one person said they couldn’t “believe we were down there (three) weeks ago and it was hot”.

A dusting was also reported in Goondiwindi on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Spicers Peak Lodge in Maryvale, 130km south west of Brisbane, shared footage of snow falling across the property for the first time in nearly 10 years.

“Snowfall! A few hours ago we were lucky enough to witness snow for a few minutes,” the lodge operators posted to Facebook.

“The last time we experienced this was on July 17, 2015, almost exactly nine years ago.”

On Wednesday morning, temperatures in Oakey just west of Toowoomba reached -0.4C, while in nearby Dalby, temperatures dropped to -1.2C.

On Tuesday, Brisbane experienced its coldest morning in more than a year, with temperatures reaching 7.4C at just before 6am.

It comes as nearly 20,000 homes and businesses were reportedly left without power across the state’s southeast on Tuesday as strong winds brought down trees and powerlines.

Wind gusts of up 60 to 70km/h swept across large areas of the southeast and Brisbane with the strongest winds reaching 72km/h in Archerfield.

The “blustery winds” are being driven by a low-pressure system in the Tasman Sea and a “tight pressure gradient between the low and a high-pressure system currently sitting in The Bight, according to Weatherzone.

Snow fell on Spicers Peak Lodge in Maryvale, 130km south west of Brisbane for the first time in nearly 10 years on Tuesday.

Multiple wind warnings have been issued for NSW, with gale warnings in place for the Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.

A strong wind warning has also been issued for the Byron Coast, Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast and Sydney Coast.

The strong winds will continue into Wednesday as the low lingers off the NSW coast but will likely ease from Thursday before a strong cold front hits the region later this week.

While chilly weather, showers and winds are expected to ease across Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and southern Queensland from Thursday, the wet weather is expected to return.

“Most places will see some clearer weather on Thursday, but it won’t last long – the next spell of rain is forecast to reach Vic, SA and Tas on Friday, and other areas during the weekend,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.

In Western Australia, a strong cold front is forecast to bring wet and windy conditions to southern parts of the state on Wednesday and into Thursday.

“Heavy falls possible across western districts. Isolated gusty thunderstorms near the coast between Perth and Albany,” the Bureau said.

Rain is expected to ease on Friday within the region.
